The town is known for Cedar Lake (formerly Lake of the Red Cedars, Armour).

Cedar Lake was settled by pioneers in the mid-19th century and originally titled West Point. In 1839, it competed with the settlements of Liverpool and Lake Court House (later called Crown Point) to be the governmental center of county of Lake County, but lost out to Liverpool. By 1870, the Cedar Lake Post Office was established, giving the region a new name.

After the Monon Railroad came to the lake's shore in 1882, many new inhabitants flocked to the region along with tourists who saw the lake as a resort destination.

From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Cedar Lake was a prominent place for Chicagoans looking for a retreat from the city.

Cedar Lake is positioned at 41 22 2 N 87 26 18 W (41.367234, -87.438326). According to the 2010 census, Cedar Lake has a total region of 9.61 square miles (24.89 km2), of which 8.22 square miles (21.29 km2) (or 85.54%) is territory and 1.39 square miles (3.60 km2) (or 14.46%) is water. The lake, which is the biggest natural lake in northwest Indiana, appears to have formed from glacial meltwaters.

There were 4,193 homeholds of which 39.1% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 6.0% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 28.4% were non-families.

26.6% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 8.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.3% were from 25 to 44; 26.6% were from 45 to 64; and 8.6% were 65 years of age or older.

There were 3,394 homeholds out of which 37.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families.

In the town, the populace was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town was $43,987, and the median income for a family was $50,431.

About 4.0% of families and 6.6% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

Lake County Public Library operates the Cedar Lake Library at 10010 West 133rd Avenue. Cedar Lake is home to the Hanover Community School Corporation and the Crown Point Community School Corporation.

The Hanover School corporation operates two elementary schools: Lincoln and Jane Ball, one middle school: Hanover Central Middle School, and one high school: Hanover Central High School.

The Crown Point school corporation operates one elementary school in Cedar Lake: Mac - Arthur.

Those in the Crown Point school fitness attend middle school and high school in Crown Point at Taft Middle School and Crown Point High School (CPHS).
