Edinburgh, Indiana Edinburgh, Indiana Edinburgh / d nb r / is a town in Bartholomew, Johnson, and Shelby counties in the U.S.

State of Indiana. The populace was 4,480 at the 2010 census.

Edinburgh was titled in honor of Edinburgh, Scotland and for many years was pronounced the same way.

The Big Blue River and Sugar Creek join to form the Driftwood River 1 mi (1.6 km) west of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh was laid out in about 1822. A founder of the town being a native of Scotland may have caused the name Edinburgh to be chose. The Edinburgh postal service has been in operation since 1823. Edinburgh Commercial Historic District, South Walnut Street Historic District, and Toner Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Severe thunderstorms formed quickly athwart Central Indiana on the evening of June 3, 2008.

One of these tornadoes traveled athwart northern sections of Brown County and southern sections of Johnson County.

The tornado exited Camp Atterbury and crossed US 31, entering the town of Edinburgh.

Several bouts of harsh thunderstorm activeness and heavy rainfall affected the Edinburgh region in early June 2008.

The first rainfall began to fall in Edinburgh at approximately 9:00 PM on the evening of June 6.

Official National Weather Service rainfall totals athwart Central Indiana amid this reconstructionranged from 3.09 inches (78 mm) to 9.85 inches (250 mm).

Runoff quickly flooded agricultural areas and much of this water made its way into a several subdivisions in Edinburgh.

According to the 2010 census, Edinburgh has a total region of 3.11 square miles (8.05 km2), all land. The ethnic makeup of the town was 95.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 3.0% from other competitions, and 1.1% from two or more competitions.

There were 1,760 homeholds of which 34.0% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 7.2% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 33.0% were non-families.

26.9% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

24.5% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 10% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.8% were from 25 to 44; 27.8% were from 45 to 64; and 12% were 65 years of age or older.

The ethnic makeup of the town was 99.18% White, 0.13% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other competitions, and 0.24% from two or more competitions.

There were 1,789 homeholds out of which 33.4% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families.

27.8% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

In the town, the populace was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older.

About 8.3% of families and 12.4% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 15.6% of those under age 18 and 11.3% of those age 65 or over.
