Porter is in the Indiana Dunes ecosystem, which played a part in the creation of The Nature Conservancy, and inspired conservation accomplishments. Porter is noted for its adjacency to the Indiana Dunes State Park and for its barns heritage.

The Joseph Bailly Homestead is positioned in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Howe Road, just north of U.S.

In addition to the Joseph Bailly Homestead, the Good Fellow Club Youth Camp and Porter Town Hall are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
