Shipshewana was titled after a small-town Potawatomi Indian. The Shipshewana postal service was established in 1889. According to the 2010 census, Shipshewana has a total region of 1.18 square miles (3.06 km2), all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 658 citizens , 297 homeholds, and 177 families residing in the town.

There were 339 housing units at an average density of 287.3 per square mile (110.9/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town was 98.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.3% from other competitions, and 0.6% from two or more competitions.
